Planting a tree and watching it grow is a satisfying experience. When you plant new trees in your yard, you need to give them the TLC they deserve. The first few years are crucial since they will determine whether your tree is up for success.

At Midstate Tree Service of Harrisburg, we believe that the best way to plant a tree is to do it right the first time. If you’re not sure how to plant trees correctly, don’t worry because it isn’t too complicated. Read on to find a step-by-step guide and other tips on taking care of your newly planted tree.

Apply the Right Amount of Mulch Properly

Mulching is essential for tree health, insulation, and weed retention. Prepare your soil with a healthy dose of mulch to add nutrients and keep the soil temperature steady. First, you need to add mulch at least 3 inches away from the trunk. Keep the mulch out to the dripline so that the trunk and root crown are exposed.

Create a layer that’s about 2 to 4 inches thick and spread it as far as the farthest-reaching branch. Never make volcano-shaped mulches that can lead to excess moisture and root rot. You can use wood chips, pine needles, leaf litter, and compost mixes as mulches.

Protect Your Tree From Animals

Your newly planted trees can suffer from animal damage when you don’t take precautions. Use a repellent and physical barrier like a wire-mesh cage to keep deer, rabbits, and livestock from eating your tree.

Another way to safeguard your tree from weed whackers is by wrapping it with fabric or white paper before the winter season. Be sure to remove it in early spring as temperatures begin to warm up.

Water Your Plants but Don’t Overdo It

You might be thinking, what’s the best way to keep your young tree. Of course, the answer is hydration. Growers should water thoroughly before, during planting time, and the day after planting. Keep the root ball moist but not too soaked and soggy. New trees need 4 to 10 gallons of water per week for their first growing seasons. The idea is that you should continuously provide water until its root system is established.

Fertilize After the First Year

Additional minerals and nutrients from fertilizers are important for tree growth. However, it is not necessary for newly planted trees. After they have established their root system, that’s when you may begin light fertilization after the first year. It is advisable to wait for one to three years before applying any form of fertilizer.

Too much nitrogen will burn their tender roots and stop them from flourishing. When applying the fertilizer, don’t put it too close to the trunk and apply only a pound per 1000 square feet.

Sunlight Is Key

As we all know, plants need sunlight for photosynthesis. Light is food for plants. Learn about the right sunlight and shade patterns because not all trees require the same amount of sun. Familiarize yourself with sun exposure basics and know whether your tree needs full sunlight, partial shade, or full shade. Take the time to learn about your trees and find a spot that provides enough light for them.

Follow Proper Pruning Techniques

Newly planted trees have wild tendencies to branch out in the wrong direction. Two to three years after planting, you’ll see tree branches compete with one another. It’s very common to see young trees with multiple branches that compete to become the “leader.” However, many strong branches mean more chances that the tree can get weak.

Tree service providers address this issue by removing weaker or wounded rival stems and pruning sparingly. At Midstate Tree Service of Harrisburg, we use correct pruning techniques to identify the main branch free from any diseases or defects. You can train your young tree to grow the right way with the guidance of a tree expert like us.

Perform Regular Tree Inspections

Keep a close eye on your tree while it’s young. Routine inspections can help monitor your tree’s health and identify issues that need to be addressed. Whether you have noticed yellow leaves or peeling barks, a certified tree expert will give you tips on how to provide proper care for your plant.
